Trawsnewid Llandrindod Transition group organised and hosted a very successful development event over the weekend of 17th and 18th July. The two day workshop was led by Transition Bro Ddyfi members Ann Owen and Mandy Dean, who led the participants through an imaginative range of activities and discussions to deepen their understanding of peak oil, climate change, consumerism and the Transition movement.
The event brought together Powys Transition activists from Ystradgynlais, Presteigne, Builth, Llanidloes and Llandrindod, and we were also pleased to welcome participants from a recently started Transition intiative in Holmfirth. The event was made possible through sponsorship from the Glasu rural development initiative.
The sombre, sometimes frightening subject matter was tackled with an abundance of good humour, realism, passion and hope. Bring and share feasts of fresh home-made food were accompanied by delicious spelt bread rolls from the Herb Garden Café in Llandrindod and green salad grown at the new Ashfield Community Land Trust in Howey.
All agreed they had learnt a lot, and would take back fresh ideas and inspiration to help their own communities prepare for the the challenges ahead. The participants were keen to keep in touch, to hold more events in future and to start a self-help network for all Transition initiatives in Powys.
Particular thanks were given to Adrian Brimer from TLT for the pre-event organisation, to Nick Talbott and Lis Davies from TLT for providing the venue, to everyone who lent equipment and books, and in particular to Grant Thomas from the Glasu team for the publicity and support that Glasu is giving to Transition initiatives in Powys this year.
Anyone who has already started or is thinking of starting a Transition initiative in Powys is encouraged to contact Grant to be put in touch with the new Powys Transition network.
