The Mari Lwyd is a Welsh wassailing tradition involving a decorated horse's skull carried on a pole. Here are instructions on how to make your own mini version to bring to Llandrindod's community wassail.

You will need:
  • The mini Mari Lwyd template
  • Coloured pens, crayons, glitter etc.
  • Scissors
  • Glue - pritt stick or similar is good
  • Masking tape
  • A stick
  • Coloured ribbons

Sunday 20th January - All Welcome, Croeso i Bawb!

We invite you to our third annual Community Wassail! Come along and help to celebrate your community orchard and encourage the trees for the coming year.

The event will follow the same schedule as last year - let's cross our fingers for dry weather so that we can get to the orchard this time! As ever though, check the Facebook event page for updates in case we have to change our plans at the last minute.

4pm - Noisy procession from the Bandstand to the Community Orchard - bring your shakers and drums and voices!
4:30pm - Tree dressing, music, hot drinks and snacks in the orchard.
5pm - Wassail ceremony, more music and general merriment.
6pm (ish) - Finish

What to bring:
A mug - there'll be a hot drink provided for everyone. To help us save on waste, please bring your own cup/mug/beaker if you can. The drinks will all be free but there will be a small charge for a disposable cup to encourage their reuse.
A slice or two of toast - yes really! We'll be hanging the trees with toast as an offering to the tree spirits and to the birds.
Brightly coloured ribbons - for dressing the trees with.
A noise maker (optional) - children especially are encouraged to bring a rattle, shaker or something to bang, to help us scare away any dark spirits that might be lurking!
A musical instrument (optional) - if you'd like to join in with the music making.
A torch or lantern - it'll be dark by the time we're done, so make sure you bring a light of some kind with you.

Dress code = WARM. Bright colours, garish patchwork, silly hats and cloaks are actively encouraged, but above all make sure you will be warm enough.
Make sure you wear suitable shoes for potentially wet and slippy ground!

If you'd like to get involved in organising the event or helping out on the day we'd love to hear from you! Just send us a message.

We recently put together a presentation as part of the celebrations of ten years of Trawsnewid Llandrindod Transition, which gave us a chance to look back at what we've achieved in the three years since the first plantings in our community orchard.

So far:
5 planting days held
57 trees and innumerable soft fruit bushes planted
3 benches and 1 sign installed
1 scything course
1 pruning course
2 wassails held
Many picnics enjoyed!

Coming up:
Curry & Quiz fundraiser – Friday 11th January 2019, 7pm in the Herb Garden Community Cafe
Wassail 2019 – Sunday 20th January 2019, 4-6pm
Tesco bags of help grant – vote for us in January and February!
Development of a community scything group to help us keep the grass cut
Installation of picnic benches, raised beds, maybe even a shelter?
More courses and events
Many more picnics!

As always, we'd love to hear from you if you have any ideas about how you'd like to see the orchard develop as a space for all the community to use and enjoy, or if you'd like to get involved in any way. The planting of our edible hedge

In November 2016 we welcomed singer-songwriter Emma Stevens to the orchard to help local volunteers plant a new edible hedge. Thanks to the Woodland Trust we were given a hundred trees of various edible varieties including hazel, blackthorn, crab apple, dog rose and elder. Emma and her team went on to plant more trees with community projects around the UK and have just released this short film about the project. Perhaps you'll spot someone you know!
